Land Use Data Set

The following metadata records do not have an online linkage to the data set:

Statewide 100 Meter EPPL7/EPIC2000 Data Set - a statewide data set that consists of approximately 400 raster-formatted data layers.  It is available on a single CD-ROM in either EPPL7 or ERDAS format.  The data themes cover a wide range of physical and biological variables along with administrative, political, sociodemographic, and transportation data.  The data collection unit for most of the variables is the 40-acre parcel.  Files have been subdivided into 100-meter by 100-meter grid cells and spatially corrected to provide improved geographic reference.  However, this processing step does not improve the original 40-acre resolution accuracy.  The data set is designed for use in regional and statewide planning, not for site-specific decision making.  This dataset is effectively the MLMIS100 county data set appended into a statewide coverage.  There is also a Twin Cities Metropolitan Area 30-meter EPPL&/EPIC2000 Data Set.

The Minnesota Land Use/Land Cover, 1969 layer is included in thestatewide data set.  It features 9 land use/land cover classes interpreted from high altitude aerial photography and recorded for each 40-acre parcel in the state.  The land use/land cover classification scheme consists of the following categories: (1) forested, (2) cultivated, (3) water, (4) marsh, (5) urban residential, (6) extractive, (7) pasture/open land, (8) urban non-residential or mixed residential development, and (9) transportation.

Minnesota Land Use - Agricultural and Transition Areas - This data set is a product of an effort to update Minnesota's 1969 land use inventory and features a 17-category classification scheme based on the Anderson Classification.  The project was funded in 1989 by the State Legislature on the recommendation of the Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCMR) in cooperation with the Red River Watershed Management Board.  Interpretation and coding of land use were done by The International Coalition for Land and Water Stewardship in the Red River Basin.  The land use/land cover classification system consists of the following categories: (1) urban and industrial, (2) farmsteads and rural residences, (3) rural residential development complexes, (4) other rural developments, (5) cultivated land, (6) transitional agricultural land, (7) grassland, (8) grassland-shrub-tree complex (deciduous), (9) grassland-shrub-tree complex (coniferous), (10) deciduous forest, (11) coniferous forest, (12) water, (13) wetlands, (14) gravel pits and open mines, (15) bare rock, (16) exposed soil, sandbars, and sand dunes, and (17) unclassified.  Data are available in ARC/INFO and EPPL7 formats.

Minnesota Land Use - Forested Area - The Manitoba Remote Sensing Centre interpreted Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery to create a raster (grid cell) land use data set for the following predominantly forested counties: Aitkin, Carlton, Cass, Cook, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, Lake of the Woods, Mille Lacs, Pine, St. Louis, and Wadena.  Date of Landsat imagery ranges from September 1991 to August 1996.  The 16-category classification system is similar to the one used for the Agricultural and Transition Areas data set, and consists of the following categories: (1) cultivated land, (2) deciduous forest, (3) water, (4) grassland, (5) mixed forest, (6) wetlands - marsh and fens, (7) wetlands - bogs, (8) farmsteads and rural residences, (9) coniferous forest, (10) other rural developments, (11) shrubby grassland, (12) gravel pits and open mines, (13) urban/industrial, (14) regeneration/young forest, (15) bare rock, and (16) roads, improved trails, and rail lines.  Data are available in ERDAS and EPPL7 formats.

The following data sets cover the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area only.  These metadata records have an online linkage to the data set:

Regional Recreation Open Space Features - This layer contains information on the Regional Park System and most state and federal land in the metropolitan area.  The principal data source for the regional components of the layer is the Metropolitan Council's 1990 land use layer.  Additional reference materials from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Minnesota DNR were used to refine the boundaries (approximate) of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Recreation Area and State Trail along the Minnesota River.  This layer shows only components of the regional system that were acquired and used as park land in 1990.  Existing, planned and proposed regional parks that have been defined since 1990 are shown as symbols indicating general location.  Land that has been added to pre-1990 parks is not included.

The following data sets cover the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area only.  These metadata records do not have an online linkage to the data set:

Generalized Land Use for the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area, 1990 - The 1990 Generalized Land Use data set is an ARC/INFO polygon coverage that encompasses the seven county Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) Metropolitan Area in Minnesota.  The data set was developed by the Metropolitan Council, a regional governmental organization that deals, in part, with regional issues and long range planning for the Twin Cities area.  The data were interpreted from 1990 air photos and include the generalized land use classes of: (1) single-family residential, (2) multi-family residential, (3) commercial, (4) industrial, (5) public/semi-public, (6) airports, (7) parks & recreation, (8) vacant/agricultural, (9) highways, (10) open water bodies, (11) farm homesteads, (12) industrial parks not developed, and (13) public land not developed.

TLG Landmarks - This is a compilation of a variety of geographic and reference point features in a set of 3 files.  It was built in conjunction with the TLG street centerlines and is usually used in conjunction with that data set.  These features cover the nine Twin Cities counties of Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, Washington, Chisago and Isanti.  The three files that make up the landmark features include geographic areas of interest (tlgaoi), linear features (tlgloi) and points of interest (tlgpoi).  The data set is provided by TLG to MetroGIS in an ARC/INFO export format.

Typical features of the tlgaoi include parks, lakes, golf courses, cemeteries, airports, etc.
Typical features of the tlgloi include railroads and creeks
Typical features of the tlgpoi include city halls, schools, hospitals, etc.

Other Information Resources

Land Use and Land Cover - U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
This data set is derived from thematic overlays registered to 1:250,000- or 1:100,000-scale base maps processed by the USGS through its Geographic Information Retrieval and Analysis System (GIRAS).  Information is provided on urban or built-up land, agricultural land, range land, forest land, water, wetlands, and barren land and represents conditions from the mid-1970s.  These data are available for no charge via ftp://edcftp.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/LULC/  at either 1:250,000-scale or 1:100,000-scale in GIRAS format.  For more information, refer to the Land Use and Land Cover Fact Sheet and User Guide

The 1:250,000-scale GIRAS data set was converted by the Minnesota Land Management Information Center (LMIC) to ARC/INFO format.  Data can be ordered by contacting (LMIC), 651-296-1211.  The file unit is 1 degree latitude by 2 degrees longitude.  The price is $95 for the first unit; $15 for each additional unit.
