Northeast Region: Total population by Minor Civil Division (MCD) is varied across the Northeast. Southern St. Louis County has the highest population distribution while Cook and Lake counties have the lowest.

Northeast Region: Population density maps by MCD display the highest number of persons per square mile in St. Louis County around the cities of Duluth, Cloquet, and Virginia. Lake and Cook counties had densities of less than 10 people per square mile outside the cities of Grand Marais, Silver Bay, and Two Harbors.

Statewide: The most notable feature of this chart is the large baby boomer generation starting at age 25B29 and continuing to age 40B44.

Statewide: Projections show the high percent of the population within the 50- to 79-years-old age category (i.e., the Ababy boomers@). The projections also show a significant portion of the population in the 25- to 39-years-old category.

Northeast Region: St. Louis County is estimated to have a slight decline in population growth over the next 25 years (based on 1990 population projections). Very little to no growth is projected for Carlton, Cook, and Lake counties.
 

Persons With Incomes Below Poverty Level, 1990, Northeast Minnesota

Northeast Region: Based on the 1990 U.S. Census by MCDs, the percentage of people with incomes below the poverty level vary across the northeast region. St. Louis County averaged the overall highest levels of poverty in the northeast region. Much of northern St. Louis, Lake, and Cook counties show high levels of poverty.
