Physical Landscape Data

Shaded Relief, Minnesota
[Map 11]                                         Source: US Geological Survey (USGS)
Minnesota: USGS Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The shaded relief was generated from a northwest light source. Greens represent lower elevations. Tans represent higher elevations. ECS data was obtained from the DNR.

Shaded Relief, Northeast Minnesota
[Map 12]                                         Source: USGS
Northeast Minnesota: USGS (DEM). The shaded relief was generated from a northwest light source. Greens represent lower elevations. Tans represent higher elevations. ECS data was obtained from the DNR.

Major Watersheds, Northeast Minnesota
[Map 13]                                         Source: DNR - Division of Waters
Northeast Minnesota: The DNR Division of Waters recognizes 81 major watersheds in the state. Of these, ten occur in the Northeast Landscape. ECS data was obtained from the DNR.

Stream and Rivers, Northeast Minnesota
[Map 14]                                         Source: Combination of MN Department of Transportation (MNDOT)
                                                                    and National Wetlands Inventory (NWI)
Northeast Minnesota: The streams information on the map is a combination of NWI linear features and MNDOT streams. The hybrid coverage was obtained from the DNR Division of Water's CD - "Minnesota's Wetland Resources". ECS data was obtained from the DNR

Density of Waterways, Northeast Minnesota
[Chart 19]                                         Source: MNDOT and NWI
Northeast Minnesota: Output from the GIS program ArcView was generated using stream and ECS data obtained from the DNR. Density was calculated by dividing the length (miles) of the waterways by the area (miles²) of the ECS subsections. Refer to the Streams and Rivers map above.

Lakes, Northeast Minnesota
[Map 15]                                             Source: USGS Digital Line Graph (DLG) Hydrography
Northeast Minnesota: The DLG and ECS information was obtained from the DNR.

Shallow and Deep Water Habitats, Northeast Minnesota
[Map 16]                                             Source: NWI
Northeast Minnesota: The shallow and deep water habitats and ECS information was obtained from the DNR.

Wetlands of the Laurentian Highlands
[Map 17]                                             Source: NWI
Laurentian Highlands: The wetland and ECS information was obtained from the DNR.

Percent Area of Lakes and Open Water Wetlands, Northeast Minnesota
[Chart 20]                                             Source: MNDOT and NWI
Northeast Minnesota: Output from the GIS program ArcView was generated using NWI and ECS data obtained from the DNR. Percent was calculated by dividing the are of the NWI wetland type by the total area of the ECS subsection. Refer to the Lake, Shallow and Deep Water Habitats, and Wetlands maps above.

MFRC Ecological Regional Landscapes
[Map 18]                                         Source: DNR and MFRC
Minnesota: Ecological assessments are to be based on ECS subsections and/or combinations of subsections within the delineated landscape. MFRC Regional committees for each landscape will be assigned the lead responsibility for ecological assessment as displayed on the map. ECS information was obtained from the DNR.

Land Type Associations (LTA), Northeast Minnesota
[Map 19]                                         Source: DNR
Northeast Minnesota: LTA boundaries date to January 1998. Brief descriptions of each LTA have been collected and are available. LTA information was obtained from the DNR.

LandSat Imagry
[Map 19.1]                                         Source: DNR
Minnesota: The LanSat satellite system originally collected this data. The image was obtained at the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry Resource Assessment's "Fornet" website (www.ra.dnr.state.mn.us).
