Roads, Northeast Minnesota

The MnDOT basemap data identifies the following roads in northeast Minnesota: interstate highways, U.S. trunk highways, state trunk highways, county state aid highways, county roads, township roads, and city streets.

Public Trails, Northeast Minnesota

The Trails and Waterways map identifies DNR trails such as grant-in-aid snowmobile, state, off-highway vehicle, ATV, and grant-in-aid ATV route systems. The map also includes USDA Forest Service trails, but specific trail types are not available at this time.

Public Recreation Information Map (PRIM), Northeast Minnesota

The PRIM data display locations of public recreation facilities and opportunities in Minnesota. Local and private facilities are not shown due to the difficulties in collecting data and presenting information accurately and clearly at the scale the PRIM maps are produced. The northeastern maps were compiled between 1991 and 1992 by Minn. DNR, MnDOT, Minn. PLAN, Minn. Historical Society, and county agencies. Portions of 12 PRIM maps were digitized to show Carlton, Cook, Lake, and St. Louis counties They include: Grand Marais, Ely, Two Harbors, Crane Lake, Vermillion Lake, Hibbing, Duluth, Sandstone, International Falls, Big Fork, Grand Rapids, and Aitkin.

Northeast Minnesota: Output from the GIS program ArcView, using MNDOT data and ECS subsection boundaries. . Density was calculated by dividing the length (miles) of the roads by the area (miles²) of the ECS subsections. Refer to Roads map above.
