Earnings by Major Industry, 1970-1995

Statewide: Trade industries have experienced the most earnings and the highest increase since 1970 with service and manufacturing industries following closely. Mining joins agriculture and forestry with low but constant earnings.

Northeast Region: At the region level, services, trade, and government industries had the highest earnings and increase in growth. Earnings in mining industries had a major decrease from 1980B1985, but have increased at a modest rate since. Agriculture and forestry earnings have remained generally constant.

Statewide: Industry earnings show that the service industry is expected to increase significantly in the future. Agriculture and mining industries are expected to remain constant. No decrease of earnings in any industry is expected.

Northeast Region:
The data totals are from Aitkin and Itasca counties as well as Carlton, Cook, Lake, and St. Louis counties. All data listed is from 1993.Iron ore and wholesale trade industries contributed the most to the northeast region in 1993. Paper mills also significantly contributed to the value. Not surprisingly, iron ore and paper mills had the highest exports of the 10 industries shown.

Northeast Region: Domestic travel includes the total direct, indirect, and induced impacts of overnight pleasure / business / pass-through travel. The total for northeast Minnesota travel includes Aitkin, Isanti, Itasca, Kanabec, Koochiching, and Pine counties, as well as Carlton, Cook, Lake, and St. Louis counties. The northeast Minnesota gross receipts have risen slightly from 1988 to 1995. State gross receipts have risen by varying rates in the same time period.

Northeast Region: Accommodations include all reported hotels, motels, campgrounds, and resorts in Minnesota. In the northeast region, these accommodations tend to be located along major highways, rivers, lakes, and the Lake Superior shoreline. As identified on the map, the majority are found in the following locations: Ely, Duluth and surrounding areas, and around major lakes in northern St. Louis County.

Northeast Region: The data totals are for Carlton, Cook, Lake, and St. Louis counties. However, prices received on individual timber sales can vary significantly from the averages shown in the report because of variability in economic and physical conditions over time.  Sawtimber receipts have fluctuated from the time period 1980B1997. They rose from 1984B1988, experienced a sharp decline from 1988B1990 followed by another increase between 1991B1993, dropped in 1994, and rose again between 1995B1997. Pulpwood receipts rose less dramatically with only a small decline in the early 1990s.

Northeast Region: Seasonal commercial homes tax data is taken from property taxes levied in Minnesota between 1974B1996. The data has not been adjusted for inflation during the time period.  Seasonal commercial taxes increased sporadically since 1974 in the northeast region. St. Louis County had the highest increase in commercial taxes, but experienced a slight decline from 1987B1990. Cook County generally increased with a large jump from 1996B1997.

Northeast Region:
Seasonal residential homes tax data is taken from property taxes levied in Minnesota between 1974B1996. The data has not been adjusted for inflation during the time period. Seasonal residential taxes increased overall in the region with St. Louis County having the most taxes and the largest increase.

The map of seasonal homes by MCD shows that Cook County averages the highest number of seasonal homes (more than 500) in the northeast region. Parts of northern and middle St. Louis County also have many seasonal homes. Carlton and southwest St. Louis counties have the least number, averaging less than 30 per MCD. Statewide, the northeast region has the most seasonal homes by MCD.
