Ecological Classification System Levels

Sections (Figure 8) are subdivisions of Provinces with similar characteristics such as:

Figure 9 shows a very generalized  map of soil materials that are a result of glacial or other land forming processes; this map, along with vegetation, was used to delineate sections in Minnesota.

Figure 10 is a map of elevation (shaded relief) that helps depict how the section boundaries relate to surficial geology.

The patterns of original vegetation of Minnesota (Figure 11),
pre-settlement wetlands (Figure 12), and hydrography (Figure 13) were all influenced by surficial geology and are consequently stratified to varying degrees by section boundaries.
